Destiny Bundle (500GB)
A couple days ago, I had the dreaded light of death on my venerable PS 3 fat 80 gig version, which was at least 6 years old, right in the middle of a game that I had spent weeks getting halfway through and one that is not currently available for PS 4. (GRRRR!!) Well after trying the blow dryer trick, which believe it or not actually works by the way to get the old Fat boy going again, I decided that I needed to replace my PS 3 with a new one so that I could actually finish the games that I hadn't before moving on to the PS 4, which is on my holiday wish list. Due to the hair dryer trick being a temporary fix with no guarantees on how long it would last, I have read that it could be from any where to a couple hours to a couple months before total failure, I decided that I needed to do this quickly. Unfortunately no PS 3 Fats are available new and I refuse to buy a refurbish or used and go through those issues, so I started researching my options. I originally came upon the PS 3 Super slim without a hard drive (12 Gig) both here (currently at 229 dollars) and other websites (W-mart has it currently for 199) and originally had decided to go for the 199 one at W-mart due to the fact that I had a 1 TB hard drive that I had previously replaced the 80 gig with in my old PS 3. However, I came across this 500 GB destiny bundle for 70 bucks more that came with a brand new awesome 60 dollar game and a 500 GB drive that normally would be in the 40 to 50 dollar price range if you bought separately and thought that overall it would be a better deal overall and possibly quicker and easier to do the data transfer from old PS3 to new PS3. Having done a data backup before a couple years ago to a USB connected hard drive, I knew that it took several hours to transfer that much data (10 hours or so originally), I hoped that a networked connected transfer should in theory be faster and in the scheme of things actually was faster, less than 2 hours as opposed to the 10 plus it would have taken for a backup to usb hard drive. Keep in mind my concern was how long my failing PS 3 would hold out before going completely out again where I could not recover it, which if I hadn't been working through a couple current PS 3 titles, would not have been a big deal.

Unfortunately Sony doesn't make the data transfer as painless as it should be and their online instructions actually forget a couple steps. Follow the Sony instruction but to avoid errors like I had, make sure you disconnect your wireless connection and media server connection on both PS 3's before you attempt to do the transfer.. Once I did that, I had no issues with the data transfer, but those errors did make me sweat, worrying about the pending failure of my old machine.

As far as the new system is concerned, it is smaller, lighter weight, quieter and runs basically the same as my PS 3 fat except its lack of backwards compatibility. The Destiny game was for me the best single game bundle available for the PS 3 currently...other than some older multi game bundles which are too expensive for what they are, or some other average or more kid oriented games, for me this was the best choice. I have not gotten into the game much yet, but so far looks and plays awesome.

Considering the issues with data transfer, Sony should have made this easier to do, especially in the case of a failing game system, the lack of backwards compatibility and the cost of a system (I think still a bit too high) that is currently being replaced by the next gaming system, I cannot give this 5 stars. I love the PS 3 and its only the lack of backwards compatibility (like this generation of PS 3) that has kept me from going on to the PS 4.

Just like my title says, for those about to fat transfer from a dying PS 3, I salute you, because I know what you are going through.

Update: For those going to try the blow dryer trick to save their data, my old PS 3 lasted about 2 days before it died for good, long enough to get my data though and delete the information off my old drive. Also unlike what another reviewer is saying, this is not an Amazon exclusive product and is available at numerous other retailers at the same price.
